Antique Victorian 9ct gold mourning brooch featuring gold ornate detailing with black enamel and woven hair. Mourning jewellery dates back to the 16th century, it became popular in the Victorian era when Prince Albert passed away when Queen Victoria went into mourning. The most interesting pieces of mourning jewellery include hair work, which was not necessarily from the deceased much of the hair was imported from Europe to keep up with demand. It was used to create a connection between deceased loved one.

 

The brooch is not hallmarked but it has been tested.

 

MEASUREMENT

The brooch measures 1.7cm in length and 1.4cm in height.
