Details

Antique Victorian mourning locket featuring black enamel set into a ornate design with the word 'In Memoriam' around the locket in a scroll design with a large star in the middle.

 

Mourning jewellery dates back to the 16th century, it became popular in the Victorian era when Prince Albert passed away when Queen Victoria went into mourning. The most interesting pieces of mourning jewellery include hair work, which was not necessarily from the deceased much of the hair was imported from Europe to keep up with demand. It was used to created a connection between a decreased loved one.

 

This locket is set in black enamel and brass, the piece hangs from a new 9ct gold chain.

 

MEASUREMENTS

The locket measures 4cm / 1.5" in height, 2.5cm / 1" in width and 0.7cm / 0.2".

 

CONDITION

Very good - the enamel is very slightly worn from age.
